The Brutalist style in websites is a relatively new phenomenon just like the web itself, but realistically the thought processes of Brutalism are not new concepts. Brutalist digital design descends from earlier design processes from the mid-1900s such as; modernist + post-modernist European graphic design + architecture.
I lived in Berlin for 2 years + the city is synonymous with this style, a lot of the buildings are characterized by their heavy + ‘ruthless’ appearance. Overall it is a seriously creative city that inspires a lot of my work, + I would regularly find myself ripping down posters from the walls of the U-Bahn + collecting an archive for inspiration.
I guess from my perspective designing in this style is all about stripping back, going big with intense contrast. In this case, this is why I have chosen a monochromatic pallet. Why yellow? Well based on colour theory yellow is a colour that represents high energy but more importantly creativity. This factory yellow pays homage to the type of industrial-type you would have seen in factories built in this style in Berlin.
