Mango Media° is a web design studio that crafts extraordinary digital experiences to empower businesses to flourish above their competition through distinctive design. With expertise spanning nearly a decade, I have honed my craft as a Digital Designer // Creative Coder. These skills have allowed me to embark on a professional journey that has taken me across multiple European agencies in Amsterdam, Berlin, Cambridge, Nancy, Bristol, Gothenburg, and London. Years of persistence, hard-work + passion have enabled me the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse range of clients, including The FA (England’s football association), DJ’s, rappers, singers, fashion brands, automotive, and many other industries.

My academic background includes a master’s in Creative Technology from UWE, specialising in UX design and creative coding. Additionally, I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Communication from NUA, refining my skills in conveying visual ideas conceptually. Prior studies in art, encompassing painting, fashion, and graphic design, laid the foundation for my creative journey. Learn more by visiting my résumé.

At the heart of my design philosophy lies the belief that the user and the brand collaboratively shape interfaces. I believe that UX/UI design is a methodological journey, therefore I draw inspiration from the Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung’s theories. This synthesis seamlessly integrates elements from conscious and unconscious realms, resulting in designs that deeply resonate and forge meaningful connections.

Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” This idea has resonated with me throughout my life. In the past, I was a painter, spending summers travelling French cities selling my art or trading paintings for rides, food or wine. Graffiti played a large role in my adolescence, which inevitably drew me to Berlin and Bristol. On top of that, I’m a musician, playing multiple instruments dabbling in various genres.

My journey into the digital realm started in 2015 when I created my first website using now-discontinued animation software. After showing it to a friend who was a developer living on Köpstadsö, a small island near Gothenburg, I got invited to Sweden to collaborate on some projects. This experience sparked my interest in coding, particularly JavaScript, and I’ve delved into creative-coding using libraries like WebGL, Three.js, and GSAP.

Being both a designer and a developer gives me a unique perspective, allowing me to visualize code while designing—a rare skill in an industry where individuals often lean strongly toward one discipline. Honestly, if you were to ask most developers or designers about their understanding of the other practice, in all likelihood, they would gaze at you with a bewildered sense of cognitive dissonance.

I once compared myself to Vincent Van Gogh. Someone told me it sounded arrogant, but in reality, Van Gogh barely made a penny in his life and his work was considered by many critics as chaotic and garish. Like me he lived in a tiny French city in obscurity and dedicated his life to his art. Unlike me, he was an absinthe drinking alcoholic, who ultimately went mad and chopped his ear off in the process.

From initial concept to actualisation, each website I have created has been made without pretense or artifice, with the simple aim of celebrating what is good and has always been good about design. By studying the rules at the foot of the giants, I was then able to learn how and when to bend or break these rules, finding the perfect equilibrium between old/new, function/beauty, fiction/reality in order to create websites that captivate and inspire those who interact with them.

Experience and exploration have taught me the importance of knowing when to fiercely preserve tradition whilst also adapting to the new technologies, trends and styles that make and will always make websites special within the inescapably changing world we live in - one pixel at a time. Changes will continue to come and I hope to embrace them with the confidence and determination that has made me who I am today.

*Interesting fact: I was born a matter of days before the first website went live in 1991, back when websites were simple black text, white backgrounds, and blue hyperlinks. Making it my life’s work to dedicate myself to create websites that push the boundaries of both design and code.

“The digital realm is an infinite space where the rules of design are still being written, what we create today will shape the aesthetic of the future.”

COMMON QUESTIONS: Answered by Mango Alexander

What is your biggest inspiration?

The world around me is my greatest source of inspiration. I am fortunate to have lived in various European cities, each imprinting its unique language and accent on my design style. Among these cities, Berlin's influence stands out profoundly. The blend of brutalism and maximalism, ingrained in the city's environment, has become integral to my design identity. The city's graffiti and urban posters, adorning its U Bahn (Metro) walls, fuel my creative energy.

Akin to Berlin, Amsterdam's design essence shares similarities while maintaining a distinctive stripped-back yet impactful aesthetic. French design exudes elegance, favoring luxury and cleanliness. During my tenure in London, I was at quite a commercial agency scene, I refined my skill in simplifying designs for corporate clients while preserving visual allure. Moreover, my years spent in Bristol immersed in the world-renowned graffiti scene have infused my design approach.

Why Mango?

Mango, often hailed as everyone's favorite fruit, caught my attention during my research. Its universal appeal made me think about the parallels with successful brands like Apple. Just like Apple's knack for implying freshness, innovation, and sleek design, 'Mango' signifies the same attributes for our brand.

Much like a ripe mango is irresistibly delicious, our products aim to evoke the same delight and satisfaction. So, here's to a name that's more than a name – it's a promise of quality, freshness, and that extra dose of goodness.

How much does a website cost?

The cost of a website can vary depending on several factors, making it a relative consideration. Key variables include the number of pages your website requires, the choice of content management system (CMS), and whether you're interested in incorporating specialised creative coding, animations, or videos.

What is UX design?

UX, or User Experience, is a design practice that takes into account how individuals interact with products. Specifically in the context of websites, designers like myself emphasize that the user's experience holds greater significance than the mere visual appeal of the design. As the saying goes, "Great design is not about how something looks, it's about how it functions."

Hence, the visual aesthetics of a design are grounded in methodology and logic, achieved by identifying the archetypal users of the product. This involves crafting fictional characters that embody stereotypes aligning with user behavior, motivations, and interests. This process culminates in a deep comprehension of the actions these users are likely to undertake when navigating the website. The outcome is a meticulously planned user journey, incorporating well-defined objectives manifested as call-to-action elements.

Are you a designer, developer or artist?

I embody both roles of a designer and a developer. My journey began with a focus on development, as the market demanded, leading me to hybrid positions within agencies that seamlessly merged design and development. But as time went on, my true passion for design took over. This led me to senior designer roles within some of the most prominent European agencies.

My present focus revolves around visual design and creative coding. I bring a unique approach to coding, specialising in crafting engaging interactions and animations. Working closely with the experienced developers on my team, I offer a unique skill blend.

My journey spans from being a prolific fine artist and graffiti artist, selling paintings and adorning the streets of London, Paris, Bristol, Berlin, and Amsterdam. My academic background includes a BA in Graphic Communication, exploring conveying complex ideas visually, and a master's in Creative Technology, focusing on UX design and creative coding.

My work is acknowledged for pushing the boundaries of interactive design through concepts like maximalism and brutalism. In my designs, I fuse both conscious and unconscious elements, resulting in emotionally impactful interfaces. My unconventional and somewhat "mad scientist" approach ensures that my designs stand out and challenge the norms of traditional design. *Nothing will ever look like a template.

What is the difference between UI & UX?

In essence, the distinction between UI (User Interface) and UX (User Experience) lies in their focuses. UX delves into the psychology of user interactions, encompassing what users click on, the information they engage with, and the creation of an intuitive user journey. It's about optimizing the overall experience.

On the other hand, UI pertains to the visual aesthetics and design aspects of the product. It involves considerations such as colour palettes, typography, visual layouts, and photography styles. UI shapes how the product looks and feels.

A balanced fusion of both practices is crucial in design. Many web designers possess a solid grasp of both UX and UI, while some opt to specialise in one area.

What is your aim on a web project?

Approaching each project as a blank canvas, my ultimate objective is to uncover the distinct essence of the brand I'm collaborating with. This pivotal element becomes the bedrock upon which I construct a visionary conceptual design, blending method and logic to meticulously craft an exceptional and captivating user experience.

I believe that a successful design should not only visually delight but also seamlessly guide users through their journey. With every pixel and interaction thoughtfully orchestrated, I aim to create an immersive digital realm that resonates with your audience on an emotional level.

By combining the soul of your brand with the finesse of design, my aspiration is to not just create a website, but to fashion an interactive masterpiece that leaves a lasting impression.

Where can I find your music?

My music is primarily experienced through live performances. The essence of my music revolves around the audience's perception of what I create. This alignment with the audience's experience parallels my approach to design, where the user or audience is at the heart of every creation.

That’s enough about me let’s
talk about you!
